What is Orbital Lipoma?
Orbital lipomas are rare, benign tumors made of fat cells, located within the eye socket (orbit). While common on other parts of the body, lipomas near the eye are unusual and can lead to vision problems, eye bulging, or pressure symptoms due to the sensitive anatomy of the orbit.
Though non-cancerous, orbital lipomas may require treatment if they begin to impact eye movement, cause discomfort, or alter facial appearance.
Signs & Symptoms
- Eye bulging (proptosis)
- Restricted eye movement
- Double vision (diplopia)
- Feeling of pressure in or around the eye
- Facial asymmetry or cosmetic changes
- Occasional mild discomfort
Diagnosis of Orbital Lipoma
To differentiate an orbital lipoma from other orbital masses, non-invasive imaging is essential:
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Excellent for detecting fat tissue and detailing anatomical relations
- CT Scan: Provides clear images of both soft tissue and orbital bones
- Ophthalmological exam: To assess vision changes or mobility limitations
Treatment Options
If the tumor causes symptoms or cosmetic concerns, surgical removal is the recommended treatment. Dr. Naba J. Borah uses advanced minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques to safely excise the mass, often without recurrence or long-term issues.
In most cases:
- The lipoma is well-encapsulated and can be fully removed
- Visual recovery is excellent
- Recurrence is very rare
